Learning to Paint: Copying Bob Ross#10

June 2019

One of the best takeaways from Bob Ross is his positive attitude. In every episode he encourages you to be yourself and express your own vision when you put your brush to the canvas. Every brush stroke you make is good if you are relaxed and having fun…even “happy accidents.”

Learning to paint with Bob Ross also helped me see and enjoy the world around me in more detail, even just on dog walks with my family on the local bike trails. There are cool details about nature that I never consciously noticed before. For example:

  • Tree leaves are not just one color green…dark cool greens in the shadow areas, lighter greens, and then highlight greens that shine yellow in the sunlight.

  • Water reflections of things are awesome!

  • Every form has a shadow side and a highlight side depending on where the light is coming from…tree trunks, tree limbs, clouds, rocks, buildings, river banks, etc.

  • The sky gets lighter down towards the horizon.

  • Things in the distance are grayer and misty.

  • I am sure there are more examples but these are the ones I most appreciate.
