Learning to Paint: Copying Bob Ross#1

March 2018 - Finally took the plunge and decided to start learning how to paint!

This first painting was very wet, slippery and sloppy because I applied way too much liquid white to the canvass, and my liquid white probably had too much linseed oil. Bob makes it look so easy!

I made two decisions at first that I don’t recommend:

1) To save money, I made my own easel out of a ladder and hardware store clips.

2) I mixed my own “liquid white” for his wet on wet technique using white oil paint and linseed oil.

After getting frustrated with my ladder and hardware clips, I purchased the Bob Ross easel which made painting a lot easier because it does a great job of holding a canvas securely in place.

I found that the Bob Ross liquid white product actually does work a lot better than my own liquid white mixture for two reasons. First, the painting surface is less slippery so your mountains, clouds, and happy little trees “stick” better. Second, having the liquid white pre-mixed out of a jar reduces set-up time.
