Learning to Paint: Copying Bob Ross#3
March 2018.
I was staring to get the hang of the wet on wet oil painting technique. I used less liquid white so the painting was not as slippery.
For all of my Bob Ross copies, I used Winsor Newton oil paints from the local crafting megastore. They worked but I don’t think they were as thick as the paint Bob Ross and William Alexander use. I would recommend buying the thicker Bob Ross and/or William Alexander brand paint or going to a good artists store and asking a knowledgable sales person for the thickest oil paint they have.
Also, buy large tubes of the colors that Bob uses most frequently so you don’t have to keep running to the store for more little paint tubes (i.e., white, blue, browns, green and yellow).
One of the greatest results of this painting technique is the soft, blended skies you can produce. They are so mesmerizing especially when contrasted with a closer object such as a mountain or tree. The photos and videos of the finished canvases don’t convey the wonderful sense of depth created by the contrast between soft sky and sharp foreground objects.
